Saturday's
The Harruby.
The aging dive boat, Harruby, was donated to the Department of Marine Coastal Resources (DMCR) by The Racha Resort and was scuttled in Bay 2 off Racha Yai in November 2009.
It's steel structure rests upright in about 22m of water with the top of the wreck at about 15m. This makes it an ideal training wreck and alternative to the much deeper and challenging King Cruiser wreck. All the windows and interior were removed making it safe for scuba divers to penetrate.
There is usually a school of batfish patrolling both inside and outside the boat and they are pretty inquisitive- usually swimming right up to divers, circling a few times before swimming off. The wreck also attracts barracuda, lionfish and moorish idols.
Artificial Reef Cubes.
Scattered at various spots around Racha Yai are clusters of large, concrete cubes. These are not solid blocks but are more like 'wireframes' that allow divers to swim through them, around them or over them and as such, make excellent objects to practice your buoyancy on without fear of damaging the delicate coral on the main reefs.
The cubes have also become home to puffer fish, juvenile yellow box fish, lionfish and the occasional moray eel.
Also, keep an eye in the sand for kuhl's stingrays that bask in the shallow, warm water.
Andaman Eagle Wreck.
Close-by to the Harruby wreck is another wreck/artificial reef called the Andaman Eagle which was sunk in early 2008.
Made of wood, she lays upright leaning lazily to her starboard side in about 20m of water. She has already deteriorated quite a lot and penetration is not possible on this dive but keep your eyes out for barracuda, pufferfish, moorish idols, snappers, batfish and nudibranchs.
